Exploring an Alcohol-Free Lifestyle
The sober-curious movement is gaining momentum.
From Gen Z to Boomers and those in between, market data shows the demand for no or low alcohol products is on the rise—surpassing $11 billion in 2022—and is expected to increase three-fold by 2026. That would explain the rise in non-alcoholic (NA) options in bars and restaurants, and even the renewed interest in concepts such as Dry January. Many brands are shedding a light on the benefits and opportunities of an alcohol-free lifestyle through a variety of product offerings and awareness and outreach events.
The sober-curious movement has been around since before the pandemic but truly caught on as a lifestyle option in the few years after. Author Ruby Warrington is credited with coining the term when she first mentioned it in her book. Since then, several celebrities, outlets, media, brands, and others have turned toward promoting a sobercurious lifestyle more publicly and the hustle for shelf space in stores has turned competitive as the non-alcohol alternatives have increased in number.

At one event in Los Angeles, California, educating about the sober-curious lifestyle, speakers, authors, wellness coaches, and celebrities came together to share their experiences and takeaways. This included founders from top NA brands including Athletic Brewing and Boisson, KTLA news anchor and author Courtney Friel and the mocktail specialist Derick Santiago, award-winning author/ founder of Manduka and LEVITYoGA Peter Sterios, and more. Pure Clarity™ Mindful Drinking, Mindful Living showcased non-alcoholic alternatives for daily enjoyment and products to incorporate into a non-alcoholic lifestyle.
Other presenters and panelists included celebrity dietician and nutrition therapist Kim Shapira, celebrity trainer and award-winning instructor Natalie Yco, global health advocate Dr. Shabnam Islam, and holistic practitioner Auna Simon. Industry renowned brands such as 213 Deli, Blk Water, Glowing Up, Good Idea drinks, HOP WTR, Moment, Parch, Sati Soda, Tilden, Tost and Tru were all represented through the event with attendees—those already immersed in the sobercurious lifestyle and those only now introduced to the concept—getting to experience some of the product offerings firsthand and leaving with words of wisdom from the experts.
Pure Clarity is the vision of Sarah Siegel who passionately lives and inspires an alcohol-free life and is a vocal advocate for integrated wellness and conscious living. The curated event targeted audiences who are either living alcohol free, or at a point in their lives where they want to seek alternatives to alcohol in pursuit of a healthy and mindful lifestyle. Sessions at the event included best practices from industry experts, meditation, and yoga classes, understanding the gut connection, movements and breathwork, and more.

Sober-curious events and meets are attracting more attention globally, and not just as a fad or trend, but as a lifestyle choice for those who would like the option of a beverage to socialize or enjoy without necessarily the effects of alcoholic content but also not a fruit or vegetable smoothie. Brands are listening and tapping into the potential of this consumer sector. So are celebrities—singer Katy Perry and actors Blake Lively and Dwayne Johnson also have sober brands they are promoting. Given how young the concept and movement is, there is much room for growth and innovation, which only means more options will be forthcoming in the next few years, making this an evolving lifestyle choice and one to watch.
