Your Job Search Toolbox Might Be Missing a Few Elements

By Mary Olson-Mezel

Here are some to help you impress prospective recruiters.

To achieve optimal results in your job search, it’s crucial to equip yourself with a well-stocked toolbox. This includes embracing your authentic “light”, crafting your compelling story, developing a strong resume, optimizing your LinkedIn profile, and leveraging your network shares executive coach, CEO and author of What Lights You Up? Mary Olson-Mezel. Each of these elements plays a significant role in capturing the attention of potential employers and navigating the competitive job market.

Crafting a Winning First Impression

A clear and concise resume is essential for making a strong first impression. Given that hiring managers often sift through numerous applications, your resume needs to stand out immediately. Research shows that recruiters spend an average of just six seconds reviewing each resume. Within this brief window, they focus primarily on four areas: job titles, former/current employers, employment dates, and education. Therefore, it’s crucial to present these elements in a way that is easy to find and read.

With the sheer volume of resumes—225 million on Indeed alone as of 2024—standing out is more challenging than ever. To avoid being overlooked, ensure that your resume is optimized for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and free from errors. A well-organized format significantly boosts your chances of being noticed, with professionally formatted resumes rated 60% higher by recruiters compared to poorly organized ones. Additionally, avoid using PDFs as many ATS cannot read them; instead, opt for a Word format for now.

Digital Presence

In today’s job market, there are so many options. Indeed, LinkedIn and so many more. LinkedIn is a vital tool for job seekers and recruiters alike. Using LinkedIn as a job search tool, but also a powerful networking tool is a must. As of January 2024, LinkedIn boasts over one billion members and 15 million job listings. An effective LinkedIn profile not only complements your resume but also enhances your professional brand. Recruiters frequently use LinkedIn to verify resume details and gauge your overall professional presence.

To maximize your LinkedIn profile, follow these expert tips:

• Add a professional photo. You’re 14 times more likely to be viewed if you have a photo.

• Write an attention-grabbing headline. Explain what it is you do. Show your passion and value.

• Draft a compelling summary. Focus on career accomplishments in 40 words or more. Include keywords but not buzzwords.

• Detail your past work experience. You’re 12 times more likely to be viewed if you have more than one position listed.

• Add skills and get endorsements. Include a mix of high-level and niche skills.

• Include volunteer experiences and causes. Almost half of all hiring managers say they view them as equivalent to formal work.

Interview Expertise

You only get one chance for a positive first impression. Getting the interview is one thing, winning in the interview is another. Research who you will be meeting, the people, the company and study the job description before each interview. Practice telling the story of your career progression in the mirror or with a trusted friend. You want to be clear, concise and be able to tell the story of how you got your start and the steps it took to get to where you are today—and why you would be a good fit for the role. This is your opportunity to make a great first impression, and get to the next interview, and the next, and then hopefully the job. Make sure you are prepared with real life examples of your accomplishments and even your challenges. Telling an authentic story of your career trajectory takes practice and I promise, the efforts will be worth it in the end. Even if you don’t get the job, you are building your network and your interviewing skills and it’s the perfect preparation for the next interview that might just be the perfect fit for you.

Employment Gaps

If you have gaps in your employment history, itʼs important to address them candidly. Employers are increasingly accepting of career breaks if you can explain what you did during that time. Whether you were raising a family, pursuing personal projects, or dealing with other life events, frame your gap as a period of growth and development.

For instance, one client described her role during a career gap as “Chief Operating Officer of the Household,” showcasing her organizational and leadership skills. Another professional used the headline “Coming Soon—to be announced” during a transition period, which was both honest and engaging. These creative explanations not only address the gap but also highlight valuable skills and experiences.

Having identified your light, your natural gifts, amplified your skills and crafted your story, the next steps involve refining your resume and LinkedIn profile. Your resume should be a powerful snapshot of your qualifications, while your LinkedIn profile should provide a fuller picture of your professional brand. Both tools must be meticulously prepared to capture and retain the attention of recruiters. By optimizing these elements and addressing any employment gaps with transparency and creativity, you enhance your chances of standing out in today’s competitive job market.
